Whenever I explain to people why I am taking this trip, I often say “I want to see the Grand Canyon and all of the other beautiful places in the US.” Well, I can now say that I’ve seen the Grand Canyon, so MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!! And boy, was it worth seeing!
Because of the haphazard planning of this entire adventure, I was only able to get one night in a campground at the Grand Canyon. We arrived around 2 PM and went straight to the Visitors Center to get my Passport stamped. From there, it’s a short walk to Mather Point, so off we headed. These first photos are all from there.
After Mather Point, we went over and checked in at our campground. The Elk welcomed us.
After getting set up, we walked up to the South Rim. There’s a geologic trail with rocks from all of the ages… quite interesting. We did part of this and wandered around the rim trail at the Lodging Area. More photos and of course Fred made more friends.
We walked back to the campground through Market Plaza – nice to see that my employer has the Bank at Grand Canyon
Also, I inadvertently left a leash at Steve & Lisa’s so replaced it with this souvenir.

In the morning, we walked back to the South Rim and completed the geologic timeline going the other way.
We left the Grand Canyon through the East Entrance so stopped at Desert View. The views from this side of the canyon are completely different. And Fred had time to make more friends….
It would have been nice to spend a whole week in the Grand Canyon, and I can say the same for many of the other spots I’ll be heading to. Because of planning, and toting a 45 lb dog around with me, it didn’t/won’t work out that I get to do a lot of hiking or overnight raft tours. I’m OK with that – I’m at least thrilled to be getting to see a taste of what our country has to offer. There are no rule books that say I can’t come back and plan better next time!!
