My Uncle, Arthur Shafran, passed away while I was in Columbus. He had been suffering from Parkinson’s for quite a while and it had taken a toll on his mind and his body. Arthur was my mom’s younger brother. He leaves behind a wife, 2 daughters and sons-in-law, 6 grandchildren, 1 niece (that’s me), 3 nephews and a grand-niece and grand-nephew, as well as 2 brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents and my mother.

Arthur was very dedicated to his family and will be missed very much. I have fond memories of time spent with him over the years. As a child growing up, I didn’t see him and his family very often because they lived in California and we lived in New York. As my cousin was having her first child, Arthur and Lusia moved to Florida to be closer to them. In doing so, he was able to have more opportunities to spend with my family, as my parents eventually moved to Sarasota, FL and were less than a 2 hours drive away.

Because I was in Columbus and I knew that several of my co-workers knew Fred pretty well from almost 2 years of me working from home, I felt comfortable asking a couple of them if they could watch Fred so that I could travel to Naples, Florida for the funeral. Sabrina and her husband Mike stepped up to the challenge and I am very grateful to them.

Admittedly, Fred was unsure this was a good idea and let everyone at the Columbus drop-off line know it as he screamed something about being kidnapped out the back window of Sabrina’s truck as they drove away. By the time they returned to the pick-up line to retrieve me from the airport, he was feeling better about life with Sabrina.
