Lake Powell is just a couple of hours drive to the northeast of the Grand Canyon. It’s quite lovely and we had a restful few days there. Unfortunately, many of the things that the Lake is known for were not currently available – most notably the boat tours into the slot canyons and Antelope Point. This is due to COVID and the toll it’s taken on the Navajo tribes whose land this area is on.
Fred did get to swim in Lake Powell a couple of times. Once at the Stateline Launch Ramp and once on Wahweap Beach. The trek down both to the water is very long and very steep. These 3 photos, strung together, are the walk back up the beach to the parking area. And poor Fred and I got slammed by a mini sand storm walking up!
From what the locals say, Lake Powell is decreasing by significant amounts every year.
Glen Canyon Dam is on the Colorado River and forms Lake Powell. Glen Canyon Dam manages water flow to Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Utah, California, Nevada and Arizona. It’s also a major source of hydroelectricity. You can read more about the dam on the Internet – just ask Google. 😀
Here are some photos of the Dam.
We went hiking at Horseshoe Bend Overlook. It’s a maintained trail, about 3/4 mile long with a fenced overlook and then a lot of not fenced rock formations that many people navigated for better pictures (me included). I wish I had worn my hiking boots that day because there was some really nice rock you could climb up high but my sneakers weren’t up to the task.
While at Horseshoe Bend, someone noticed Fred’s Fi collar…turns out his sister works for Fi and so they had a Fi-fest of sorts, taking tons of photos of Fred (and I) to show her colleagues back at work. They were a nice family vacationing with their mom for her 60th birthday.
We stayed at the Wahweap RV Campground. It’s located right on the Arizona/Utah border… hence the name of the earlier mentioned Stateline Launch. My watches had trouble keeping track of what time zone we were in so I had to keep googling the time in Arizona so I’d know what time it was.
I was located in a campsite with a view. They sure got that right.
