We stopped at Fort Monroe on our way from Williamsburg to our next campground in Virginia Beach. Once again we had a beach with a lot of signs saying ‘no dogs,’ so no photos of Fred swimming here.

Inside the Fort, the first thing we encountered was a cemetery for canine companions. The cemetery was just recently closed in the last few years but it looked like new additions were still being made.

The next photos are from the walking tour inside the Fort. This is no longer an active base, but people do live on site.  Included in the photos are the quarters where Jefferson Davis was confined, the Lincoln Gun, quarters where Lincoln stayed,

When I came across the markers for African American arrival in Virginia, I encountered a gentleman who said that he is a descendant of these people. He told me that there are quite a few families in town and that they have somewhat regular gatherings.
